Knee Surgery for Ethel Rose

Jesus said, "Blessed are all who hear the Word of God and put it into practice" (Luke11:28, Tyndale, Living Bible).

God is Good. He is Real. He cares. Very often I hear the quotation from Jeremiah 29: 11-13 from Tyndale, Living Bible: "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope…when you pray, I will listen. You will find me when you seek me, if you look for me in earnest." In King James: "The Lord appeared, saying, I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee" (Jeremiah 31:3). "Thus saith the Lord: Call unto Me, and I will answer thee and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not" (33:3).

God chose prophets and told them what to say to His people in the Old Testament. We are His people today. Jeremiah, according to God's Word, was telling the Jews to repent from their sinfulness…just as ordained ministers expostulate to us today. The Bible is our guide for living. Other books become out-dated. Not the Bible. It was written over a period of 1600 years by 40 God-appointed authors. It is recorded history. There are indisputable witnesses for the doubters. It changes lives.

My January "Happenings" was about my problem with health insurance and doctors, which God took care of in a miraculous way. Praise His Name! My daughter-in-law was having an equally miraculous adventure with God through prayer. That's my "Happenings" for March:

Jack and I provided a Christian home for our three children. We both taught Sunday School (teenagers and adults). Jack was a deacon. Pastors and their families were constant visitors to our home. Our children have been attending Sunday School and Church since babyhood.
One Sunday night, Ronnie and I were having a mother/son talk. He had been dating a girl, age 26, never married; an only child. He was 29, divorced. They were at church with our family that morning. He said, "We want to get married. The only thing is that she doesn't believe in God. Her parents are divorced. She lives with her mother and her mother's sister. None of them believe in God."

Naturally, I quoted II Corinthians 6:14, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?" Worshipping God was a vital part of Ronnie's life (and our family's).

We were most happy when she walked to the front of the church, acknowledged her belief in God and Jesus Christ as His Son; accepted Jesus' death on the cross as forgiveness of her sins; and pledged to live for Him the rest of her life.

They were married in our Church; bought a home in a newly developing subdivision; joined the neighborhood church. Then she said, "I'm not going to church anymore. That's the most boring thing there is. I can't stand it." Ronnie went alone, every Sunday, for thirteen years. One Saturday morning, when he woke up, she announced, "I'm getting a divorce. We don't have anything in common. I've packed all your clothes and things in your pickup. You can leave now!"

My son was single for about 3-1/2 years. We made a pact: He had to get my o.k. before he got serious with anyone! Three definitely got my "thumbs down!" Then he invited Ethel Rose to Sunday dinner at our house. He and Jack watched TV in the den, while Ethel Rose and I got acquainted in the living room. She'll tell anyone, "My mother-in-law really gave me the 'third- degree' before Ronnie and I could get married!" She was PERFECT for my son. She was age 48; mother of a son and a daughter, both happily married; was divorced a year ago in Denver, Colorado; came to Houston to live with her sister until she found employment. She just happened to visit the same church Ronnie belonged to. Ronnie, age 46, walked to his regular place in the church sanctuary. There was a pretty lady sitting in HIS place! He sat beside her. The next Sunday, the same thing happened. Skyrockets were blasting! He introduced himself; asked if she'd have lunch with him. YES! The friendship began. Later, Ronnie said that while he was praying, he heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Marry her."

Next, I had to know why she was divorced. She explained: "My ex-husband was raised in a very strict Christian family. His mother was a wonderful Christian woman. She took all eight of her children to church every time the doors were opened. When they "grew up," five chose not to attend church anymore. Three daughters accepted the Lord in their early 20's. I was a "die hard" Catholic and my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law were always telling me about the Lord--that I needed to have a personal relationship with Jesus; but I didn't want to hear none of that. Thirteen years after marriage, I realized that my life was going nowhere. I was tired of the "fast life" and I knew I had to do something. I called one of my sisters-in-law and told her I needed this personal relationship with the Lord. She was ecstatic. The 2nd time I went to their church, I responded to the altar call and accepted the Lord Jesus into my life (Feb.1974). My husband never wanted to make that change. I could not continue my life with him. I was miserable with his indifference as I tried to explain to him the peace I had worshipping God; being friends with Christians . We were unequally yoked! I filed for divorce. I had to get away…leave Colorado."

Ronnie and Ethel Rose were married in their church Aug. 27, 1988, twenty-two years ago.Yes, they are faithful in worshipping God together. You'll find them in church every Sunday. All our family love Ethel Rose with all our hearts. She's a wonderful lady. She and I have had many prayers over Ronnie through his lung cancer, brain tumors, and especially these past two years since Ronnie fell off the ladder and broke his foot. He suffered much. Six months, flat on his back, unable to move, with his leg in an iron cage. Man cannot make a foot like God can. He is on disability; unable to work. Ethel Rose is precious, sweet and patient caring for him.

Now it's turnabout! The doctor has informed Ethel Rose she is badly in need of knee replacement surgery on both knees. She was hospitalized on Tuesday before Thanksgiving for the first operation, Nov. 17. There were lots of problems; lots of suffering. Dangerous blood clots formed. The knee became stiff; locked up. There were many prayers from her church, me and my prayer group. She was two weeks late getting into therapy. Progress was too slow on bending the knee. On January 6, the doctor threatened to put her under anesthesia; then "force" the knee to make it bend. The "flex" began to improve with exercises three times a day, and therapy every other day. It will take twice as long for recovery. Her paid sick-leave-pay will expire January 15. Her knee was supposed to be well by then, so she could return to work. Now, the doctor projects he can release her for work about March 17. They NEED a source of income!

A whole lot of praying was going on. Ethel Rose has been employed in this office for 22 years. On Jan. 7th, she e-mailed the vice-president of her department, requesting permission to do work at home. He responded on Jan. 11th: "Thank you for updating me on your clinical condition. I have no problem with your working at home. You are one of the employees I fully trust. I just have to inform (the office manager) about my plan. I will meet her later this week. She is on vacation in St. John's, Virgin Islands, at her daughter's wedding and will return on January 13th. Take care and exercise your newly repaired knee." We all prayed, prayed, prayed.
On January 15, the last day for wages, the office manager called. Great news! An hour later, the Network Systems Manager called and remotely set up the access to Ether Rose's computer from work. She is able to perform all her duties remotely from home!!! There will be no lost pay, and she can work at home until the doctor releases her! Praise God! He cares!

Ronnie said: "God has showed her His favor! We give to God, and He gives back to us just like He says He will! GLORY!''
